Program for editing dat files
techno
Hello

1st/
I notice when editing a date file with notepad some date files are simply txt and others are coded
is there a program that will uncode the other date files.

2nd/ most important
when saving a dat file from notepad it auto saves as Encoding: ANSI.......
Vietcong seams to be happy to work with ANSI however vietcong will sometimes crash.
3 other notepad Encoding options from notepad are Unicode, Unicode big endian, UTF-8
however if saving as ether one of them codes vietcong will crash on starting
so only option to use is ANSI but I feel this might not be the correct code for VC
and that maybe the dat file needs to be saved with another Encoding that notepad
does not support.
IS there / or would there be another editing program for date files that has a better
code option to save with other then ANSI that VC will work with ?

which .dat files do you want to edit?

techno
any dat file. is there a program that will open and save any dat file?
in it's true code?

I think I found an answer anyway for now cheers for your reply,
Well I hope so, so far so good...

I am using windows 7 64Bit

right click and open .dat with wordPad (not notepad)
when finished go to "save as" and select "Other Formats"
down the bottom change save as type to "Text Document - MS-DOS Format"
save the file as file.txt and then rename it from *.txt to *.dat

don't save directly as file.dat, for some reason it changes back to windows ANSI code

I have been testing for the passed 2 hours and so far so good,
this might not be the answer in the long run but it's looking
to be a good one for now.

it still saves in the code of ANSI but I think and hope I am write
by saying OLD DOS-ANSI code and not NEW Windows-ANSI code

cheers

no, there are different .datfiles: some contain text info's, some are just renamed from .cbf to .dat ( e.g. mapfiles). there are differences.

Yep, a file extension is just a hint for the operating system to choose the right action when executing it. It is independent of the file contents, you can rename any file to .dat.
For example, you could rename an .exe file to .jpg and then execute it. The system will "think" its a picture and start the viewer, but it will fail to load because the actual content is not picture data.

You have to know about the data format used in that particular file in order to reasonably change things. It may be any individual encoding, raw data or just plain text.

Try these editors:
Notepad++

Thanks brchi notepad++ is a great program and will use it for other things as well
HxD I have no idea about,

I have been working the passed 3 months about 10 hours everyday on something to
try help keep vc101 alive; However I find making changes to dat files and dds files
'once packed up again' the game 40% of the time crashes, and as fast as what I am
doing 'will be downloaded and used' just as fast will stop being used because of the crashes.

I don't know who other then LDC I can trust to talk to and maybe help me with working out why it crashes
because I don't want what I am doing to get out in the wrong hands to be edited and used in the wrong way.

I would also like a custom CBF.wcx packer that only my self and the person I trust to have so no one could
ever unpack it to look at what it has and then create new hacks.

I do not want royalty for it, meaning I don't want or need everyone to know what I am doing
and I don't want my name all over it claiming how good I am, I just want players to like it and
it makes 101 more fun again and maybe bring back some old players as well.

I am doing this for Vietcong and the players 'not just me'

I didn't want to say to much on any forums but I am at the point of giving up and letting what I
have done so far be able to be downloaded so I can move on the my next thing.

I would like to chat to someone but as I don't know who!!!
I can only ask that maybe LCD could pass on my skype name to who he would trust.

I have a long friendship with LDC as he is the only one that has ever gone out of his way to come to
my forum to talk to me and we share idea's and I help beta test when needed.

respect to LDC thanks mate...

I will not say exactly what it is I am doing here but will explain to the one I chat with
but will ask who ever that is to not share info until we decide if we finish it and let others download
or just scrap the project all together...

None the less if it never does make it to the world, I will still use it despite the crashing, I can live with it.

Cheers
