finalizing
RiskyDingo
I have finished modifying a map, using a levels file imported via Total Commander.

It is in my Ptero-editor now as a renamed .sco file. Let's call it DINGOMAP.SCO

Now what do I do? (It is meant to be a CTF map.)

The tutorials on this site are not very clear at all.

you want to copy an old map to your editor and add ctf as gamemode, then finalize it?

1. copy the entire content of the "levels" folder from the .cbf to your local levels folder.
2. open the .sco in the editor.
3. reload texdb and configure/edit what you want.
4. place "special objects -mphelpers" somewhere in the levels and set the gamemode to ctf and select the flag you need.
5. under the panel "editor" you find the "multiplayer game editor. there you can add and change gamemodes (use the helpfile) and change your maps name.
6. finalize.

lol ok

but pay attention if you refinalize your map and the previous created map is still in the maps folder the editor doesn't overwrite the old one...

LOL... omg, why didn't I see that? Sorry, Apfelbaum !

All this time I kept reading "finalize" and thought it was some esoteric process or number of steps, like moving files around and changing file names.

It's an actual button on the menu.

YES!

How long does it take the Ptero Editor to compile the scripts during finalization?

This one map I've edited has been undergoing script-compiling for about 30 minutes, as I write this.

Frown

UPDATE: editor went "Not Responding"

Yea, I had that too. The compiler is quite fragile.
Don't forget include guards for header files, also if you want to include code in the header, call it .inc, not .c.

What? "Somewhere in the levels" ?

Somewhere on the map..

"Guards" for the "header files"? I have no idea what that means.

"Include code in the header"? ... I don't know anything about coding. Why would I need to do that?

1. Does the compiler freeze up because of certain things the mapmaker did with the map that he should avoid? Or is it just fragile in general?

2. When the compiler does work, how long does it take to finish compiling the scripts?

3. Do I fix this by restarting the editor and try to finalize again, and again and again until it finally works? The compiler has failed on all three maps I've tried to edit.

Oh, I thought you were scripting something!

Well, there's no documentation on it and some things just don't work (besides the 'continue with stackvar'-crashbug).
Normally, it doesn't even take a second, even for larger scripts.
I don't know why it freezes for you, what files are in the script\ folder?

I don't even know where the script folder is.

What are scripts?

ANYWAY: I've tried all kinds of things, I even re-installed the VCEditor. The Editor stalls out at "Compiling scripts" and goes no further.

It doesn't "freeze up" as such, it just sits on my screen like it's stuck in a loop or something.

This is extremely frustrating.

Brchi
Then maybe go through the few folders in levels\<yourmap> until you find it..

Scripts are like programs. CTF mode for example is realized by a script, also any other game mode.

That's called a freeze.

Try to delete all files in dev\compiler but not the .exes and default & inc folders.

What if I can't fix the problem of freezing at 'Compiling scripts'?

Is it possible to give my "pre-finalized" folder(s) and file(s) to someone else with an editor, and see if they can finalize my map on their computer?

Sorry to pester you with this, but this problem won't go away.

Maybe it's just a quirk in my laptop?

Yea, I can try. Zip and upload the whole levels\<yourmap> folder.

I zipped the DESERT folder from my Vietcong LEVELS folder.

http://www.mediafire.com/download/az4dt73e4w3a3jw/DESERT.zip

It is based on Stronghold2. I named it FortTSUNAMI.

I tried to expand or improve possible "avenues of attack", in the context of a siege and aftermath of a hurricane, while avoiding (I hope) unnecessary clutter.

You might want to look it over for any problematic changes I might have made.

If FortTSUNAMI works, I'd like to offer it as a 100-point CTF map for your BPH server.

I added some ramshackle access walkways to upper parts of the mountain - will that cause problems? I considered making a fence of sorts to block off the map's edges.

Before finalizing, I suppose the creator(s) of Stronghold2 should be credited much as possible. But how is that credit entered while editing?

Thanks ! VC

Finalized within a few seconds.
There seems to be something wrong on your side.
I can offer you help via teamviewer to check your game installation.

There's already a "Designed & made by Yrchi" on the FPV map, just call the map DESERTV1.1 and add something like "V1.1 by RiskyDingo" to that handmap image or gamemode descriptions.

1.
"FPV map"?

2.
I was in the process of adding a long fence higher up on the mountain.

But one of those simple invisible no-go barriers would be a lot easier, or just adjusting an existing barrier. Am I able to do that? Or is that a 3DSMax thing?

3.
Even more important.... is the Black Pajama Homi server still a "going concern"? Seems inactive lately. Frown
